Our Athletes

"Seeing all the athletes cheering for me and Sandra Forde when we lit the Special Olympics Cauldron at Opening Ceremonies was the coolest thing. I wish the other athletes could take my place and feel what I was feeling."

- Sean O'Rouke, member of the Special Olympics 2003 World Team

Special Olympics New York serves 46,106 athletes with intellectual disabilities, providing them with year-round sports training and competition opportunities. In all, more than one million athletes around the world benefit from participation in Special Olympics.

No matter what your ability level, you can enjoy Special Olympics. No matter what your sport is - whether it's Basketball or Bocce or Bowling, or almost anything else - we've got you covered. Special Olympics New York organizes and runs approximately 400 competitions each year, and we never charge our athletes anything to participate.

Special Olympics means something different to everyone. Some of our athletes are most proud of the medals they've won. Others talk about the friends that they've made. Many athletes say that participating in Special Olympics has helped them become more confident, independent people.

What will Special Olympics mean to you?
