    Saturday, athletes and coaches at the Metropolitan Hotel had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Jill Biden and a presidential delegation. She stopped in to take photos with the teams and wish them luck.
     
    “Meeting Team USA is the highlight of my trip,” she said. “We will be rooting for you. You make our country proud.” Read more about Dr. Biden’s visit.

Getting Ready for the Opening Ceremony

Lights, Camera, Action!!! The preparations for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 are underway and everybody speaks about an Event where national pride will rise, since we are hosts of these remarkable Games organized for people with intellectual disabilities.

The 7.500 Athletes from 185 countries that will march in the packed Panathenaic Stadium on June 25th and in the Panathenaic Stadium on July 4th for Closing Cermonies, will shout to the whole world:

“Let me win! But if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt”. [ continued ]

ESPN to Cover Special Olympics World Summer Games from Athens, Greece

Host Town: Tuesday
Tuesday was the first day of training in Rhodes. Each team headed to their respective venue for about 90 minutes of exercise and practice. The first day of any event usually presents a few challenges, and Tuesday was no exception. It took more flexibility to adjust to bus schedules and venues that were not quite what was expected, but Team USA made the most of everything. [ continued ]



Host Town: Wednesday
Sports training continued Wednesday. The teams are all discovering fun facts about Greece along their trip, largely thanks to the volunteer escorts on the buses. We have figured out that gas translates to about $9.52/gallon here, which explains why there are so many motorcycles, scooters and bicycles on the road. We also learned that the Greeks use solar panels to heat their water. We are learning to say a few words in Greek, like “yia sas” for hello and ”efxaristo” for thank you. [ continued ]
